Today I am going to give a simple explanation of what Acid Reflux actually is:

- Acid Reflux is actually called GERD, or gastro-esophageal reflux disease.

- Symptoms result from the reflux of stomach acid back up into the esophagus.

- Heartburn is usually the step before Acid Reflux.

- Acid Reflux is a condition that affects the esophagus.

Acid Reflux happens when your lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close the way it is supposed to. This ring-shaped muscle controls what goes in and comes out of your stomach.

This condition is known as heartburn and doesn't turn into Acid Reflux until it becomes chronic. Nearly twenty-five million adults experience heartburn on a daily basis. This results when fluid from the stomach is refluxed through the LES. This liquid contains acid and a protein-digesting enzyme. The acid burns the esophagus and can be very painful.

GERD or Acid Reflux is not developed until the condition becomes chronic. There are many products advertised on television and in magazines designed to limit heartburn. Once GERD develops it is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing treatment.

In my next article I will cover the symptoms of Acid Reflux.
